Rethlay Rubymae Paynter
Mrs. Rethlay Rubymae Paynter, age 89, of 4805 Cedartown Highway, Lindale, passed away on Sunday evening, September 5, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Paynter was born in Sugar Valley, Georgia on March 15, 1921, daughter of the late John Byrd Rogers and the late Soonie Davis Rogers. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Cedartown. Mrs. Paynter was a devoted pastor’s wife assisting her husband, Rev. Willie Taylor Paynter, in his ministry for over 66 years. She was preceded in death by Rev. Paynter on May 29, 2002. Prior to retirement, she worked for a number of years in the textile industry and retired from the Goodyear Rubber & Tire Plant in Cedartown.
Survivors include 3 daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Paynter Fowler, Lindale, Mrs. Marsoonia Electure Paynter Gowens, Dalton, and Mrs. Marlene Augustine Paynter McClure, Lindale; 2 sons, Silas Samuel Paynter, Lindale, and Edward Lamar Paynter, Lafayette; a sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Augustine Sullivan, Acworth; 2 brothers, Davis Rogers, Plainville, and Charles Rogers, Douglasville; 21 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at 3pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home with Bishop Jackie McClure officiating. Interment will follow in the Towe Chapel Cemetery in Adairsville.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6 until 8pm. At other hours they will be at the residence.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and are asked to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home on Wednesday at 2:30pm.

Ruby Joyce Smith
Mrs. Ruby Joyce Smith, age 64, of Huffaker Road, Rome, passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Smith was born in Rome, Georgia on September 20, 1945, daughter of Ruby Neil Turner Lance. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, William Smith, to whom she was married in 1962; her mother, Ms. Ruby Neil Lance, Rome; a daughter, Mrs. Wanda Faye Peoples and her husband, John, Rome; a son, D. L. Smith, Rome, 5 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at 11am at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. Mr. John Peoples will officiate. Those wishing to speak with the family are asked to do so following the service at the cemetery.

Hobart L. Money
Mr. Hobart L. Money, age 79, of Rome, GA died Saturday, September 4, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Money was born in Cherokee, AL on November 21, 1930, the son of the late Porter Lafayette Money and Bertha Butler Money. Mr. Money was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force retiring in 1990 with the rank of Master Sergeant with 36 years in the U.S. Air Force and Georgia Air National Guard. He was employed with General Electric from 1955 until 1991. Mr. Money was on the Board of Directors at the Coosa Valley Credit Union. He was a fifty year plus member of Cherokee Masonic Lodge #66 F & AM, member of the Eastern Star, Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 of the American Legion and a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Mr. Money was a member of the Yaarab Shrine Center of Atlanta, Rome Shrine Club and General Electric Retiree Club. Mr. Money was an active member of the West Rome Baptist Church. In addition to his parents Mr. Money was preceded in death by his first wife, Paula Money in 2003 and a step-son Scott Hester.
Survivors include his wife Ida Faye Money; two sons, Joe Money of Rome, GA and Randal Money of Bonaire, GA; step-children, Kathy Whitfield and Larry Hester; grandchildren, Kelli and Joseph Money and Amanda Money, Amy Burnett, April Johnson, Lisa Hester and Buddy Hester, a number of great-grandchildren and a sister, Margaret Graham of Cedar Bluff, AL.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Wednesday, September, 8, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. at the West Rome Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Oates officiating. Interment to follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites accorded by the Robbins Air Force Base Honor Guard and Masonic graveside rites provided by Cherokee Masonic Lodge #66 F & AM. There will be a call communication on Wednesday at 12:00 P.M. at the Cherokee Masonic Lodge #66 F & AM for the purpose of attending the service for Brother Hobart Money. On Wednesday Mr. Money will be carried to the West Rome Baptist Church to lie in state from 12:00 P.M. until the funeral hour.

Charley Jean Moyers
Mrs. Charley Jean Eudy Moyers, 75, of 216 Glen Ridge Rd., Rome, GA, passed away Tuesday morning, August 31, 2010 at a local hospital after an illness of several months.
Mrs. Moyers was born June 1, 1935, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the only child of Jack Eudy and Dixie Lee Douglass. She graduated from Carson-Newman College with a degree in vocal performance and received a masters degree in church music from Southen Baptist Theological Seminary. During these years, she was active in chorales, served as soloist and music director for several churches, and performed as singer and actress in “Horn in the West,” Boone, North Carolina. After graduate school, she taught music theory and voice at Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas.
In 1960, Charley Jean married Kenneth Moyers and moved to Rome where they began 38 years of music ministry at First Baptist Church. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary just two weeks ago. Mrs. Moyers taught English at East Rome High School, music at Darlington Lower School, and private voice and piano lessons from her home. She directed the church’s Junior Choir program for many years, and sang in and often conducted the Chancel Choir on Sunday mornings while Mr. Moyers played the organ. She served on the board of the Community Concerts Association and sang with the Rome Symphony Chorus. At the time of her death, she was an active member of North Broad Baptist Church where she taught (and loved) her Sunday School class, sang in the Sanctuary Choir and served the church is various other roles.
Of special importance, Charley Jean devoted the past 50 years to the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic organization committed to furthering women’s education. A member of Rome’s Chapter E, she served as Georgia State P.E.O. President in 1995. This group and the friends she made over the years were one of her greatest joys and accomplishments.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Moyers is survived by one son, Douglass, and his wife, Janet, of Richmond, Virginia; and one daughter, Ruth, and her husband, Chris Hallman, of Newnan. She has four granddaughters: Nancy and Helen Moyers, and Mary Douglass and Catherine Hallman. They, and many others, affectionally referred to her as “Choddy”. Other survivors include her sister-in-law, Pearl Moyers-Dean, and her husband, John Dean, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and the devoted family of Russell and Helen Dean, Clinton, South Carolina.
A celebration of music and her life was held Friday, Sept. 3, 2010 at 12 noon at the North Broad Baptist Church, Rome, with her pastors and other ministers officiating. The family received friends from 10:30 until service time and again following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the P. E. O. Foundation, Georgia Scholarship Endownment, 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, Iowa 50312 or the Music Ministry at North Broad Baptist Church, 1309 North Broad St., Rome, GA 30161.
Hilda Katherine Ussery Ingram
Mrs.Hilda Katherine Ussery Ingram, age 82, of 733 Booger Hollow Rd., Lindale, died at the home of a daughter, Lillie Casteel, 921 Laurelwood Circle, Canton,GA Thursday.
She was born in Monticello,GA., Nov.18,1927, a daughter of the late Henry Ussery and Martha Petterman Ussery and lived in Floyd County most of her life. Mrs.Ingram retired as a cutter at Advance Glove Mill, was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church, was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Davis and her husband, Walter Allen (Walt) Ingram, well-known automobile salesman, June 16, 1985.
Surviving are two daughters, Shirley (Michael) Quinn, Canton and Lillie Casteel, Canton; grandchildren, Jeffrey Bohannon, Sean Kelly, Jody Casteel , Kip Casteel, and Taylor Casteel; five great-grandchildren.
Gravesided and interment services will be held at 2:30 pm Sunday in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with Rev. Ken Ray and Chaplain Michael Westmoreland officiating.
The family will receive friends at Parnick Jennings,Sr.’s Good Shepherd Funeral Home from 1 pm until 2:15 pm Sunday and those attending the service are asked to meet at Good Shepherd Chapel by 2:15 pm Sunday.

Billie Reynolds Mull
Billie Reynolds Mull, age 84, of 7 Paris Drive, Rome, died in a local hospital Thursday.
He was born in Floyd County, Feb.22, 1926, a son of the late Preston Mull and Gertha Reynolds Mull and retired from General Motors Assembly Line. Billie was a veteran of World War 2 serving in the US Navy and was a member of Shorter Ave. Baptist Church. Preceding him in death were a sister, Dot Powell and brother, Doyle Mull.
Surviving is the widow, the former Mary Betty Coulter, to whom he was married Oct.9, 1948; two daughters, Mickie Hofferbert and Terri(Jimmy) Salmon, both of Rome; grandchildren, Jennifer Morgan, Traci Davis, Shane Hofferbert and Jill Burns.; eight great-grandchildren.
The family will hold a private service.

Madeleine Sue Addison
Ms. Madeleine Sue Addison, age 68, of 317 E. 8th Street, Rome, passed away on Wednesday morning, September 1, 2010, at a local hospital.
Ms. Addison was born in Rome, Georgia on April 6, 1942, daughter of the late Ebb H. Addison and the late Annie Dell Evans Addison. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rome. Prior to retirement, Ms. Addison was a teacher at Pepperell High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Kirkland.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Shannon Higgins Reddish and her husband, Ronnie, Newnan; a son, Charles H. Higgins, IV, and his wife, Carol Cooper, South Haven, Mississippi; 7 grandchildren, Siara, Trey, Jamie, Kelsey, Whitney, Josh, and Mackenzie; a sister, Barbara Johnson, Mt. Dora, Florida; nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at 11am at the Rome First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jane Brooks officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the Rome First United Methodist Church on Saturday from 10am until the service time.

Dorothy Elizabeth Duke
Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Lemming Duke, Silver Creek, went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, August 31, 2010.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Paul Duke, her parents, Othel I. P. Lemming and Ruby Irene Dean Lemming, and a beloved brother, Carl Eugene Lemming.
Mrs. Lemming is survived by her loving son and caregiver, Leslie Paul Duke, Lindale; a sister and caregiver, Mrs. JoAnn Thomason and her husband, Gary, Stone Mountain; two brothers, William Gurney Lemming and his wife, Doris, Kingston, and Donald Lee Lemming and his wife, Teresa, Cohutta; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Margie Lemming, Calhoun, and Mrs., Margaret Duke, Lindale; brothers-in-law, Wesley Duke, Lindale, Robert H. Duke, Rome, and Charles Allen Duke and his wife, Sara, Douglasville; nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Duke was a member of the Silver Creek United Methodist Church and a former member of the Lindale First Baptist Church, where Pastor B. L. Bond led her to the Lord Jesus Christ as a teenager.
Music was always a part of Dorothy’s life starting with the effervesant Glee Club Director at Pepperell High School, Mrs. Evelyn Torrence Harle, and several choir directors, especially the Rev. Lee Smollar who led her church choir ministry to several cemetery candle lighting and music services in Atlanta and Tucker, Georgia. She was also blessed by the pianist at her church who was a very close friend, Mrs. Nancy Ingram.
Mrs. Duke graduated from Pepperell High School Class of 1954, and worked for many years as secretary and bookkeeper at the Salvation Army in Rome where she established a long-lasting relationship with Salvation Army officers Mrs. Mary Ashley and her late husband, and former Board Chairman, Parnick Jennings, Sr.
Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Duke and her son, Leslie, continued to operate the family business, The Flight Box, in Lindale. Mrs. Duke was a loving, caring and compassionate person and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at 1pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home with her pastor, the Rev. Thomas Bowen, and former pastors, the Rev. Lee Smollar and the Rev. Michael Holt, officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Betty Sue Franks Myers, age 63, of Navarre, Florida, formerly of Rome, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Myers was born in Floyd County on September 25, 1946, daughter of the late Hubbard Franks and the late Bessie Haygood Franks. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Monroe Myers, by a daughter, Milissa Clark, by 2 sisters, Pauline Seabolt, and Shirley Franks, and by a brother, Roy Franks.
Survivors include 5 daughters, Becky Rollins, Rome, Michelle Myers, Rome, Milinda Looney, Rome, Faye Weeks, Kentucky, and Samantha Myers, Florida; 2 sons, Lee Myers, Rome and Randy Myers, Rome; 13 grandchildren, Nicola Jordan, Amber Yother, Kayla Phillips, Stephanie Bennett, Brandy Rollins, Haley Faloon, Nikki Myers, Lauren Myers, Kasey Myers, Joshua Gowens, Miranda Gowens, Dustin Weeks, and Tiffany Weeks; several great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Juanita Bannister, Mary Gibson, and Louise Hartley; 3 brothers, Jack Franks and his wife, Ruby, Robert Franks, and J. Essie Cornwell Barton
Mrs. Essie Cornwell Barton, age 95, of Venice, Florida, formerly of Rome, passed away on Sunday, August 29, 2010, in Venice.
Mrs. Barton was born in Rome, Georgia on November 12, 1914, daughter of the late James T. Cornwell and the late Camilla Powell Cornwell. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Barton was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Leon Barton, in 1979, by a grandson, Mark Barton, by 5 sisters, Jessie Robinson, Grace Brumbelow, Clara Roberson, Ruby Carney, and Edna Loveless, and by 3 brothers, Horace, Claude, and John Cornwell.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Barton and his wife, Melida, Venice; 2 grandchildren, Ann Hutton and James Barton, both of Venice; 4 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Johnson, Rome; several nieces and nephews.

Martha Sue Harris Odom
Mrs. Martha Sue Harris Odom age 79, of Rome, GA, died Monday, August 30, 2010, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Odom was born in Thomaston, GA on August 29, 1931, the daughter of the late Clarence and Myrtice Granger Harris. She retired from the Georgia Forestry Division after fifteen years of service.
Survivors include her husband of sixty years, William Earl Odom of Rome; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Barbara Odom of Cartersville, GA; two daughters, Bonnie Odom of Juneau, AK and Cindy Holbourn of Acworth, GA; three grandchildren, Brandy Murphy, Bradley Murphy, and Aimee Odom; and a sister, Ann Trendel of Lakeland, FL.

Betty Jean Heath
Mrs. Betty Jean Chapman Heath age 75, of Rome, GA, died Sunday, August 29, 2010, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Heath was born in Floyd County, GA on December 5, 1934, the daughter of the late William Clarence and Onie Mae Bennett Chapman. She retired from Wiseman Bakery. In addition to her parents Mrs. Heath was preceded in death by her husband, John Heath.
Survivors include a special friend, James Bright of Rome; three brothers, David Chapman, Donald Chapman, and Terry Wayne Chapman all of Rome; and two sisters, Mardene Baker and Shirley Gentry both of Rome. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. in the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Oaknoll Chapel with Rev. Larry Bohannon officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

Cady Lou Roberts
Mrs. Cady Lou Roberts, age 88, of 12 Chateau Drive, Rome, passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at a local health care facility.
Mrs. Roberts was born in Franklin County, Georgia on January 9, 1922, daughter of the late James Varner and the late Frances Gunnels Varner. She was a homemaker and was a member of Vann’s Valley Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class, and the Women’s Missionary Union. She was married to Weyman Roberts on February 14, 1942, and lived most of her life in their home on Sanders Road in Rome.
Family was Cady Lou’s joy and her passion and include her husband, Weyman Roberts, 2 daughters, Fran Klos, and Penny Smith and her husband, Joe; grandchildren and their spouses, Chris Pickle, Beth and Burt Brown, Jennifer and Sean Sheridan, Ben and Ashley Curry; great-grandchildren, Alex Brown, Anna Brown, Ryleigh Curry, Aiden Sheridan, Jaxton Curry; sisters-in-law, Martha McDowell, Eloise Ragland, and Eloise Roberts; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Vann’s Valley Baptist Church on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at 3pm with Rev. Curtis Heyward, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the East View Cemetery

Elizabeth Kirton Ackman
Mrs. Elizabeth Kirton Ackman, age 69, of Sandy Springs, GA, passed away Sunday evening, August 29, 2010, in Altus Hospice in Atlanta after a long battle with cancer.
Mrs. Ackman was born in Rome, Georgia on June 15, 1941, daughter of the late Samuel Wilson Kirton and the late Elizabeth Bridges Kirton. She was a graduate of West Rome High School and received her degree from Shorter College. She had a long and distinguished teaching career including 25 years working with and rehabilitating troubled youth, many of whom continued to look to her for guidance in their adult lives. She was a communicant of St. Jude’s Catholic Church.
After retirement, she turned to her artistic side and along with her husband, Anthonio Ackman, established Rimba Raya Jewels. She enjoyed designing and hand making one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry which she sold at artist markets and over the internet. Trips with her husband to Indonesia and Brazil sparked an interest and desire to help save the Rain Forests and work toward a better environment world-wide, which she did through her blog and contributions from proceeds of her jewelry sales.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her uncle, Myron Kirton, cousins, Kenneth Kirton, Stratton Kirton, and Anna Wayne Lott, as well as other cousins and her extended Indonesian family.
Graveside and interment services will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at 2 pm at the graveside in Pisgah Cemetery. Deacon Antonius Pancha Anugerah will officiate. Those wishing to attend the services are as to assemble at Pisgah Cemetery on Wednesday at 1:45 pm.

Selina Gilbert Brownlow
Selina Gilbert Brownlow, age 45, of #1373 Livingston Road, Rome, died on Sunday morning, August 29th, 2010 at Atlanta Medical Center in Atlanta.
A native of Floyd County, Selina was born on July 23rd, 1965, the daughter of Rosemary F. Haney and the late Robert Lee Brownlow. She had spent the greater part of her life in Floyd County, was a member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and attended Coosa High School.
Survivors include her parents, Junior and Rosemary Haney of Rome; 1 brother and sister-in-law, Brent and Lisa Brownlow of Rome; 2 step-brothers, Sterling and Shane Haney of Rome; 1 niece, Brandy Cannon and 1 nephew, Randy Brownlow.
Funeral services for Selina Gilbert Brownlow will be held on Wednesday afternoon, September 1st, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Harvey Bowman and the Rev. Rayford Davenport officiating with interment to follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

Amy Sue Meers Barnett, age 69, of #3212 Blacks Bluff Road, Rome, died Saturday evening, August 28th, 2010, at the residence.
A native of Decatur, Alabama, Mrs. Barnett was born on December 13th, 1940, the daughter of the late J.C. and Louise Williams Rogers. She had spent the greater part of her life in Floyd County and was a member of the New Harvest Church in Cleveland Tennessee. Mrs. Barnett was self-employed in the operation of Glory Cleaning Service. Mrs. Barnett was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Diane Meers, by a son, Jimmy Wayne Meers, by a sister, Virginia Choate and by a brother, Terry Rogers.
Survivors include her husband, James Thomas Barnett to whom she was married on November 14th, 1978; 1 daughter, Rhonda Wilkie of N. Augusta, S.C.; 3 sons and daughters-in-law, James Lee Meers and his wife, Rebekah of Rome, Michael Anthony Meers and his wife, Wanda of Rome and Christopher Shane Meers and his wife, Kari of Rome; 12 grandchildren, Shannon Larman, Brad Meers and his wife, Rachel, of Augusta, GA., Chance Meers, Allie Meers, Madison Meers, Corey Meers, Taylor Meers, Whitney Meers, Thomas Michael Dillard, Cherina Dillard, J.T. Dillard and Mallory Meers; 3 great-grandchildren, Grayson Wayne Meers, Areannia Dillard and Jamisyn Larmon also survive as do 4 sisters, Syble Hines of Rome, Jean Howard of Summerville, GA., Dale Parham and Tina Hines both of Trion, GA.; 4 brothers, Jimmy Rogers of California, Donald Wayne Rogers of Ringgold, GA., Carl James Roger of Summerville, GA. and Raymond Rogers of Rome. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Barnett will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 AM in the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Hank Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

James Paul Howell, Jr.,
James Paul Howell, Jr., age 78, of the Cave Spring Road, Rome, died Saturday morning in a Rome hospital.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Howell taught at East Rome High School and had served on the Floyd County Board of Education.
A Memorial Service for Mr. Howell will be held on Saturday, September 4th, 2010 at Fred Talley’s Parkview Chapel Funeral Home.

Bobby Hogan Durden
Mr. Bobby Hogan Durden age 73, of Rome, GA, died Saturday, August 28, 2010 in a local hospital.
Mr. Durden was born in Fayette County, GA on December 10, 1936, the son of the late Albrey Durden and Nellie Carrie Durden. He retired from International Union of Operators Engineers Local #926 with over forty years of service. In addition to his parents Mr. Durden was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Streetman and a brother, Lee Durden.
Survivors include his devoted wife of twenty-three years, Carolyn Kelley Durden of Rome; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ted Durden and Sharon Gray of Morrow, GA and Robby and Sharon Durden of Cave Spring, GA; a daughter, Shelia Guice of Henry County, GA; step-daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Poncho Padilla of Riverdale, GA, Angela and Mark Bennett of Rome, and Beth Blalock of Rome, GA; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and two brothers, Thomas and Allen Durden. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at 2:00 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Joey Ineichen officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Louise Huether Burton, age 77, of Rome, passed away Thursday at Floyd Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mrs. Burton was born in Germany and moved to Cave Spring in 1952 with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Charles Richard Burton, her parents the late Gottlieb & Hulda Huether, and brother, Gottlieb Huether and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Burton all of Rome.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, Rome, GA.
She is survived by her daughters, Jeanette (Jerry) Hughes of Dacula, Barbara (David) Odom of Cartersville, a son, Bob Burton of Pensacola, FL and two grandchildren, Branden Hughes of Atlanta, and Aimee Odom of Cartersville.
She is also survived by her brothers, Edgar, Richard, & Adolph Huether all of Rome and sisters, Erica Adkins of Rome and Vera Worthington of Atlanta, numerous brothers & sisters- in- law, nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home with her Pastor Michael Holt officiating. Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens

Ms. Margaret Shannon Hodges age 79, of Rome, GA, died Thursday, August 26, 2010.
Ms. Hodges was born in Greenbrier, TN on July 16, 1931, the daughter of the late James Shannon and Lena Margaret Cotton Shannon. She was a longtime member of West Rome United Methodist Church and retired from Floyd County Tax Office as a clerk.
Survivors include a son, Chuck Hodges (Vicki Carter) of Canton, GA; a daughter and son-in-law, Martie Keesee (Mark) of Cumming, GA; grandchildren, Bobby and Drew Hodges and Kyle, Tyler, and Jacob Keesee; a brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Pati Shannon of Johnson City, TN; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Tom Cloyd of Chapel Hill, NC and Kay and John “Bubba” Woodfin of Murfreesboro, TN. Several nieces and nephew also survive.
Graveside and interment services will be held Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with Rev. Gary MacWorter officiating.

Mr. Charles Leonard Buffington, age 78, 123 Weatherly Street, Buchanan, passed away Thursday, August 26, 2010, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton.
Mr. Buffington was born in Gordon County on March 7, 1932, son of the late Leonard and Mary Culberson Buffington. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Lyle Buffington and by several brothers and sisters. Prior to his retiring, he was employed as Marketing Director for Flowers Bakery in the Southeast region. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Irene Lee, to whom he was married on May 4, 1980; 2 daughters, Mrs. Teresa Godfrey, and her husband, Gary, Atlanta, Mrs. Lori Seitz, and her husband, Michael, Stockbridge; 3 sons, Louie Buffington, Cedartown, Tony Buffington, Rome, and Gage Buffington, Buchanan; 3 step-children, Tony Netherland, Carrollton, Tammy Wallace, Carrollton, and Tracy Thompson, and her husband, Gary, Whitesburg; 2 sisters, Mrs. Ruth Clifford, Rome, and Mrs. Evelyn Whorton, Centre, AL; 2 brothers, Arnold Buffington, Rome, and Raymond Buffington, Crestview, FL; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

Robert H. Dodds
Robert Harvey Dodds, 91, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 26, in Rome, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Dudley Dodds, and Zenobia Holt Dodds, and by a sister, Mary Alice Bettersworth.
Robert was born in Flora, MS, on April 30, 1919. He grew up in Sartartia, MS, where he helped his father build the Sartartia High School. As a young man, he joined the CCCs prior to enlisting in the Air Force during WWII, where he served as a radio operator.
He was married to Patricia Hall Dodds on September 22, 1951. In addition to his wife Patricia, he leaves a son, Dr. Robert H. Dodds, Jr. (Deana) of Mahomet, IL, and a daughter, Deborah Dodds Gordon (Dennett) of Rome, GA, two nieces, Carol Doss (Len) of Memphis, TN and Marsha Estes (Terry) of Pinson, AL, and a step-grandson, Jason Bland of Springfield, IL. He also leaves his faithful caregivers, Angie Mitchell and Shirley Ragland, both of Rome.
Robert spent most of his working life in sales, retiring from Raleigh Tire Company in Memphis, TN. In Memphis, he was a member of the Whitehaven United Methodist Church, a member of the Helping Hands Sunday School Class, the Methodist Men’s Club and the Memphis Sales Executives Club. Since moving to Rome in 2002 to be near family, he has been a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Robert was a loving husband and devoted father. He was also an avid fisherman who had a deep love and respect for all nature. He especially loved being out on the many rivers, lakes and streams of Mississippi, West Tennessee and Arkansas.
Funeral services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Sunday, August 29 at 3 p.m. with Dr. David Campbell and Rev. David Duncan officiating. Graveside services follow at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the honor guard of Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion conducting military graveside rites. Family will receive visitors at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Saturday, August 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The LRE Men’s of Trinity Visitation Team will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family requests memorials to be sent to Trinity United Methodist Church or the Coosa River Basin Initiative in Rome.
Frances Elizabeth Whittle
Mrs.Frances Elizabeth Whittle, age 93, of 25 Simpson Dr., Garden Lakes, died Friday morning.
She was born in Floyd County, July 2, 1917, the daughter of the late Forrest Payne and Pulmer Barton Payne and lived here all of her life.
Mrs.Whittle was a charter and faithful member of Beech Creek Church of God, the building that now houses Good Shepherd Funeral Home. She was married March 8, 1927 to Aubrey Whittle and he died Sept.15,1986. A brother, Robert Payne also preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons and their wives, Bill and Marion Whittle, Rome and Lydell and Barbara Whittle, Rome; grandchilden, Sherri Hooper, Debbi West, Chris Whittle and Angie Dickens; great-grandchildren, Tyler West and Lauren Hooper.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p m Sunday in the Chapel of Parnick Jennings, Sr.’s Good Shepherd Funeral Home with Rev.Tim Dickens and Parnick Jennings,Sr.officiating. The great-grandson, Tyler West will give the eulogy. The family will receive friends at Good Shepherd from 1pm to 2 pm Sunday. Interment will be in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

Surviving in addition to her parents include her maternal grandparents, Carl and Vicki Davis, Rome; her paternal grandparents, Steve and Becky Gable, Cedartown; her maternal great grandmother, Mrs. Edna Ball, Rossville; her paternal great grandmother, Mrs. Ida Patterson, Bremen; an aunt, Katie Gable, and her husband, Matt, Bremen; an uncle, John Davis, and his wife Jessica, Rome; several cousins also survive.

Betty Johnson Stone
Mrs. Betty Johnson Stone, age 78, died at the residsence, 1321 Chulio Rd. SE, Rome at 10:30 Wednesday morning.
She was born in Rome, Aug.15, 1932, a daughter of the late Jesse Lee Johnson and Ethylen Blalock Johnson. Betty graduated from Rome High School, received her registered nurse degree from Floyd Junior College, worked in OR at Floyd Medical Center, Redmond Regional Hospital, was a nurse at Georgia Kraft and retired from Crown Craft in Calhoun. A devoted member of Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church, she worked with the Senior Citizens, in Vacation Bible School and prior to illness, attended with her husband most of the Rome Braves home games.
Betty was preceded in death by brothers, Sonny Johnson, Jess Johnson, John David Johnson and Bobby Johnson; sisters, Jewel Wilbanks, Gladys Jarrell, Cathy Belle Smith, Janie Proctor and Alene Hartley along with a grandson, Robert Kyle Stone, Feb.7, 1994.
Surviving is her husband, Robert Donald Stone, to whom she was married, Oct. 4, 1952; three sons, Kenneth Donald Stone and wife, Chandra, Silver Creek, Bobby Eugene Stone and wife, Dixie, Silver Creek, Wiliam Anthony Stone and wife Kathlene, Knoxville, TN; three granddaughters, Tiffany, Nicole and Natalie Stone and two grandsons, Curry and Corey Stone.

Ms. Elizabeth Ann Butts Devlin, age 64, of 72 South Avery Rd. SW, Rome, died August 23rd.
She was born September 1, 1945, in St. Clair Co., AL., a daughter of the late Lovick Walters and Lela Hollingsworth Walters and was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church. Prior to ill health, she owned and operated several resturants. She was proceeded in death by several siblings.
Surviving are daughters, Tina Johnson, Rome and Mary Butts, Cedar Bluff; sons, Larry(Dawn) Money, Rome, Terry(Cheryl) Money, Rome, Jackie(Heather) Money, Rome, Jason Butts and Jerome Butts, Cedar Bluff; brother, Tommy Walters, Cave Spring; sisters, Carolyn(Bob) Howell, Centre and Mae Tilly, Centre. Grandchildren, Crystal, Brittany, Nathan,Lacey, Nick, Alexis, Hannah and Madison.

Thomas Alvin Bynum
Mr. Thomas Alvin Bynum, age 88, 17 Kris Drive, NE, Rome, passed away Monday, August 23, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Bynum was born in Summerville, GA, May 3, 1922, son of the late Houston Francis Bynum and the late Cordie Ponder Bynum. He left North Georgia in 1948, moving to Detroit, MI, and residing there until 1954, when he moved to Bell, CA. He relocated to Rome in 1991. For 25 years, he was employed with Crown-Zelenbach-Gaylord Division, retiring in 1986. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II with Company E. of the 184th Infantry. During his service, he received the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the Bronze Arrowhead Medal. He was also the recipient of the Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster for wounds received in combat in Okinawa on April 9th and April 15th, 1945. He was a member of the New Antioch Baptist Church in Shannon and was a member of the American Legion Post #5 in Rome. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Jean Gould Bynum on February 6, 1996, and by a brother, Guy Edward Bynum.
Survivors include a daughter, Carrie Bynum, Granada Hills, CA; 2 sons, Thomas Allen Bynum, El Monte, CA and Marc Alvin Bynum, and his wife, Michelle Anderson, Calhoun; 6 grandchildren; 1 brother, Houston Fred Bynum, Shannon; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 27, 2010 at 6:30pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home. The Rev. Tony Cargle will officiate.

Mr. Harlan Oliver Rampley, age 65, 143 Pleasant Valley Road, Silver Creek, passed away Monday afternoon, August 23, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Rampley was born in Floyd County on November 6, 1944, son of the late Calvin Curtis Rampley and the late Laura Mae (Estelle) Wilson Reynolds. He was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Audrey Deaton Rampley. Prior to his becoming disabled, he was employed with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local #926. Mr. Rampley was a member of the Doyle Road Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, the former Betty Jean Jackson, to whom he was married on January 24, 1966; 2 daughters, Mrs. Martha Ann Ray, and her husband, David, Silver Creek, and Ms. Laura Jane Rampley, Silver Creek; a son, Harlan Wayne Rampley, and his wife, Lisa, Silver Creek; 3 sisters, 7 brothers, 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

Madison Jade Conway, age 5 of Armuchee, passed away Saturday, Aug. 21st following injuries in an automobile accident.
Madison was born June 14, 2005, in Floyd County. She attended Fellowship Baptist Church, and Floyd Springs United Methodist Church. Madison was a Kinder Garden Student at Glenwood Elementary School. She loved to go to church and sing.

Mrs. Kathy Dee Milford Myers, age 62, of 124 Trentwood Place, Garden Lakes, passed away Aug. 22nd at her residence.
Mrs. Myers was born March 3, 1948 in Monticello, Georgia she was a daughter, of the late, Dee Milford, and Kathleen Jarrett Milford. Mrs. Myers was a member of Wilkerson Road Baptist Church, and for several years was employed with the Floyd County School Systems, as a teacher aid. She was a graduate of Tucker High School.
Survivors include her husband, Bobby Myers to who she was married September 17. 1965. Her children, David Myers, Rome, Kim and her husband Alan Beard, Rome, Andrew and his wife Vanessa Myers, Douglasville, grandchildren, Corey Myers, Robert Myers, Grayson Myers, Macayla Beard, Nicholas Beard, Logan Beard, Rae Lynn Myers, and Shelby Myers. Several nieces and nephews.

Sonja V. Nicholson
Ms. Sonja V. Nicholson passed away Saturday, August 21, 2010 in Rome, Ga.
Ms. Nicholson was born in Jeffersonville, Indiana on April 17, 1954 to Sylvan and Ruby Wynn. Ms. Nicholson was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Nicholson of California and her mother Ruby Cox Wynn or Rome.
She is survived by her daughter, Toni Casey Moore and her husband Arron of California and her unborn 1st granddaughter, Hunter Evelyn Moore, her father Sylvan Wynn of Rome, Ga: Her Brother Bruce Wynn or Rome, sisters Patricia Ridgway of Arizona, Sister Pamela Wynn of Rome, Nephews, Clinton and Bradley Wynn, Scott Akemon all of Rome, Ga, nieces Megen Middleton of Cave Springs, GA, Krissy Rios of New Mexico.

Seaborn Newton Whatley
Mr. Seaborn Newton Whatley, age 99, 225 Plainville Road, Rome, passed away Sunday, August 22, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Whatley was born on April 10, 1911, on the family farm near Shannon. His children, grandchildren, and many of his great grandchildren were and are being raised on the farm. His great grandchildren are the sixth generation to be raised there. He was the son of the late Seaborn Jones Whatley of Plainville Road and the late Emma Jane Anderson Whatley of Adairsville. He was a long time member of the Enon Baptist Church.
Mr. Whatley was a life long farmer on the farm purchased by his great grandfather immediately after the Civil War. Over the years, he owned and operated Newman Mountain Peach Orchard and Whatley Farm Eggs. Since his retirement from those enterprises in the 1960’s, he has raised beef cattle on the farm.
Over the years, he was a member of the Plainville Masonic Lodge, the Farm Bureau, and the Rome Rotary Club. He was a Floyd County Road Commissioner during the 1950’s. Mr. Whatley was also a founding trustee of the Salmon Cemetery Fund, an endowment for the maintenance of the cemetery, and served many years on that board. Until his death, he was the oldest living graduate of Model High School.
Mr. Whatley was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Gertrude Savage Whatley in 2003, by 3 sisters, Adelia Whatley Reeves, Grace Whatley Kelly, Mary Jane Whatley Powell, and by a brother, Newton Anderson Whatley.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Susanne Whatley Anderson; 2 sons, Dr. Seaborn Jones Whatley, and his wife, Kay, and John Wilson Whatley, and his wife, Cherry; 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 11am at the Enon Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Dempsey officiating. Private interment will follow later in Salmon Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 225 Plainville Road, Rome, on Tuesday evening from 5 until 8pm. At other hours, they may be contacted at each of their respective homes.
Pallbearers will include his grandsons, Doyle Wayne (Chip) Woodall, John Gregory Whatley, Seaborn Jones Whatley, III, Robert Clyde Whatley and Douglas Eugene Pratt, and his great grandsons, David Brock, Steven Whatley and Jake Woodall. Honorary pallbearers will include his great grandsons, C. J. Whatley and Caleb Whatley.

Brenda Johnston
Brenda Johnston, age 69, of Rome died on Friday morning, August 20th, 2010 at Winthrop Manor of Rome.
A native of Dade County, Georgia, Mrs. Johnston was born on July 18th, 1941, the daughter of the late Willis G. and Amy Ragland Kinsey. She had spent most of her life in Floyd County and was a homemaker. Mrs. Johnston was of the Baptist Faith and was preceded in death by a son, Larry Johnston in 1982 and by a brother, Harry Kinsey.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Angie Swearinger of Rome and Cindy Rogers of Laurel, Mississippi; 4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren also survive as do 2 brothers, Hugh Kinsey of Rome and Earl Kinsey of Tampa, Florida.
Funeral services for Mrs. Johnston will be held on Monday evening, August 23rd, 2010 at 7 o’clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Jody Brock officiating. Interment will follow on Tuesday morning in the Summerville City Cemetery, Summerville, Georgia.
Mrs. Johnston will remain at Fred Talley’s Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 until 7 o’clock.

John Douglas Brannon
Mr. John Douglas Brannon age 66, of Rome, GA, died Wednesday, August 18, 2010 in a Rome hospital.
Mr. Brannon was born in Birmingham, AL on October 8, 1943, the son of the late John Dee Brannon and Josie Lee Embree Brannon. He served in the United States Air Force and attended the Church of Jesus Christ of L.D.S. Mr. Brannon loved his children and grandchildren. Prior to becoming disabled he was a truck driver and worked for Armstrong Glass Company.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Rebecca and Kyle Washington of Pleasant Grove, AL and Alicia Pinkard of Rome, GA; three grandchildren, Kristen Brannon of Rome, GA, Nicole Pinkard of Rome, GA, and Riley Crone of Rome, GA; a great-granddaughter, Mary-Jane Hughes of Rome, GA; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Joe Bill and Sue Brannon of Statesboro, GA and Steve Brannon of Sylacauga, AL; six sisters and a brother-in-law, Fredericka Hill of Attalla, AL, Connie Justice of Birmingham, AL, Dorothy Jean Garner of Sylacauga, AL, Barbara and Robert McMahon of Sylacauga, AL, Theresa Rowell of Sylacauga, AL, and Sharon Russell of Attalla, AL; and a step-sister, Virginia Brannon of OK. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Dennis Patrick “Denny” Kadinger
Mr. Dennis Patrick “Denny” Kadinger, age 75, of 10 Crestwood Drive, SW, Rome, passed away on Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at a local hospital.
Mr. Kadinger was born in Montrose, South Dakota on February 24, 1935, son of the late Lawrence J. Kadinger and the late Clara Duffy Kadinger. He was also preceded in death by a son, Kirk Kadinger, by a grandson, Kenneth Patrick Kadinger, and by 2 brothers, his twin, David Kadinger, and Jerry Kadinger. Mr. Kadinger was of the Catholic faith. He worked in sales for the Colonial Baking Company for 35 years and also with the Coosa Baking Company. For the past 10 years, he was a self-employed food broker. Mr. Kadinger was a great dad and grandfather and had a very gracious heart.
Survivors include his wife, the former Barbara Jean Upchurch, to whom he was married on August 1, 1953; 2 daughters, Kathi Clevenger and her husband, Richard, Muncie, IN, and Kelli Kadinger and David Tanner, Rome; 2 sons, Kenny Kadinger and his wife, Judy, and Kevin Kadinger and his wife, Suzanne, all of Muncie, IN; a daughter-in-law, Crystal Kadinger, Chatsworth; 2 sisters, Joan Wilson and her husband, Jack, West Covina, CA, and Lois Spangler, St. Petersburg, FL; a brother, Mike Kadinger and his wife, Penny, Crawfordsville, IN; 2 sisters-in-law, Shirley Kadinger, Crawfordsville, IN, and Barbara K. Kadinger, Cincinnati, OH; 10 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; several nieces and nephews.

Sarah Elizabeth McDonnell Catanzano
Sarah Elizabeth (Betty) McDonnell Catanzano of Big Texas Valley Road, Rome, Georgia entered the kingdom of heaven on August 18, 2010 following a battle with cancer.
Betty was born to the late Sarah Exine (Blake) McDonnell and Isham Fennell McDonnell in Birmingham, Alabama on February 23, 1937. She grew up in the Edgewood area of Birmingham and moved to Rome, Georgia in 1959 with her husband and children.
Betty was a devoted wife and mother. Her thoughtfulness and love toward family and friends were made manifest by her actions toward each person. She had incredible faith and served from birth through her early life in the Episcopal Church and in her later life in the Unity Church. She reached out time and again to touch the heart and soul of the other person, accepting him (her) just as he (she) is. She had a special artistic gift for creating beautiful things, as shown through her paintings and poems. She loved children and was always able to make them happy by engaging them in art, puzzles, games and stories. She was prolific reader and student of spiritual writings. Betty always maintained an extremely positive attitude. Her faith provided the catalyst for her positive attitude, all of which inspired those who knew her.
Betty is survived by her husband, Robert Joseph Catanzano; by her son and his spouse, Cary Steven Catanzano and Sharon Elaine Catanzano; by her daughters and their spouses, Christy Marie Wilder and James Marcus Wilder, Carol Robin Guice and Kenneth Van Guice; by her grandchildren, Ashley Elizabeth (Hayes) Philbrick and her husband, Timothy Neil Philbrick, Kendyl Mae (Guice) Clark and her husband, Joshua Shane Brewer Clark, Rachel Marie Hayes; Anna Lauren Catanzano; Charles Ethan Hayes, Matthew Nicholas Catanzano; and Harrison Grant Guice; by her sister and her spouse, Crenshaw Jones and John Edward Jones; by her bother, Isham Fennell Burns; and by her nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Saturday, August 21, 2010 from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm followed by a graveside service at Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens at 1:00 pm with the Rev. Frank Wood officiating.

Frances McNew Carpenter
Frances McNew Carpenter, age 75, of the Alabama Highway, Rome, died Tuesday morning, August 17th, 2010 at a local hospital.
A native of Floyd County, Mrs. Carpenter was born on January 1st, 1935, the daughter of the late J.M. and Ester Gilreath McNew. She had spent her entire life in Floyd County and was a homemaker. Mrs. Carpenter was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Mrs. Carpenter was married December 23, 1950 to John Marion Carpenter who preceded her in death in 2005. Mrs. Carpenter is also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Laura Carpenter in 1998.
Mrs. Carpenter is survived by a son and daughter-in-law; Danny and Wanda Carpenter of Rome, three grandchildren; Jason Carpenter, Katie and Luke Ramey. Seven great-grandchildren also survive as do a sister, Betty Sue Smith of Rome.
Graveside and interment services for Frances McNew Carpenter will be held on Friday morning, August 20, 2010, at 11 am from the graveside at Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery at Coosa with Dr. Frank Wood officiating.
Mrs. Carpenter will remain at Fred Talley’s Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends on Friday morning, August 20, 2010 from 9am until 10am.

Billy George Beard
Billy George Beard, 88, 7 Wentworth Place, passed away Monday evening, Aug. 16, 2010 at a local hospital.
Mr. Beard was born in Rome on April 27, 1922, the son of the late George C. Beard and Sara Greene Beard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Cora Beard Cochran and Marion Beard Ware, brother, Nunally O. Beard, and nephew, Wayne Ware.
Mr. Beard was a well-known merchant having worked at Montgomery-Ward in Rome and then assistant manager at their stores in Maryland and Virginia. After returning to Rome, he worked with Belk-Rhodes for several years and also Wheeler’s Men’s Wear. Later he owned and operated Beard’s Store for Men and then retired from Rome Manufacturing Co. He was a member of the Rome Church of Christ where he led the singing for many years.
After graduation from Boys High School in 1941 he went into the Army serving with the First Infantry Division (Big Red One). He was a veteran of “D” Day on Omaha Beach and received the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, European-African Medal with Spearhead and with four Major Battle Stars and the Army of Occupation Medal.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 59 years, Doris Jones Beard, to whom he was married Aug. 26, 1951; one daughter, Leigh Beard Wilson, and her husband, L. Steve Wilson, Cave Spring; one son, David W. Beard, Calhoun; nieces, Rita B. Montgomery, and husband, Ray, Cartersville, and Gayle W. Bowman, Rome; nephews, Tim Ware, and wife, Beverly, Cedar Bluff, AL, and Tony Cochran, and wife, Tina, St. Augustine, FL; and a number of great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug, 19, at 11 a.m. at the Thomas B. Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with Ministers Brooks Boyd and Alvis Miller officiating. Interment will be in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Ron Dasher, Tony Cochran, Vic Tinney, Bill Greer, Tim Ware and Ken Hardin.

Hugh Lamar “Jack” Montgomery, Jr
Mr. Jack “The Bee Man” Montgomery, age 90, of 76 Cunningham Road, Rome, GA passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon, August 16, 2010 after a year of declining health.
Mr. Montgomery was born in Vann’s Valley on August 20, 1919 in the house that he resided in his entire life. He was the son of the late Hugh L. Montgomery, Sr. and the late Mabel Powers Montgomery. He was also preceded in death by his wife Agnes “Mitt” Lackey Montgomery and one sister, the late Carolyn Montgomery Shipley. He was a member of Vann’s Valley United Methodist Church.
Mr. Montgomery graduated from Cave Spring High School in 1936 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from the University of Georgia in 1940. When he returned home from college, he took over the family business, Montgomery Dairy. In 1955 the Montgomery Dairy joined with other dairies to form a co-op called Green Meadow Dairies, of which Mr. Montgomery was president. Eventually Green Meadow merged with Atlanta Dairies and subsequently Mr. Montgomery and the Montgomery Dairy were recipients of numerous awards for outstanding achievement in milk production. After Mr. Montgomery officially retired from the dairy business in 1975, he continued to run a hay and cattle farm with son Monty.
In the 1960’s, Mr. Montgomery earned the nickname “The Bee Man”, when he started Jack’s Bee Farm. He was quite well known in the community for his unique sales approach which was to sell honey on the honor system from his front porch. Mr. Montgomery was active in the Cedar Valley Beekeeper’s Association in the 1970’s and conducted many beekeeping seminars for area school children and adults.
In 1964 Mr. Montgomery became a National Weather Observer. As one of many volunteer weather observers, he conscientiously contributed his time to relay vital weather data to NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS). During his 90th birthday celebration in 2009, Frank Taylor presented Mr. Montgomery with a recognition award for 45 years of continuous volunteer service.
Survivors are his son, H.L. “Monty” Montgomery and daughter in law Patricia Montgomery of Cave Spring: Three nieces and several great nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Thursday, August 19, 2010 in the Thomas B. Griffin Memorial Chapel of the Daniel’s Funeral Home with the Reverend Gerald L. Folds officiating. Interment will follow in the Cave Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 until 9 PM at Daniel’s.

Mary Katherine Vaughn Levy
Ms. Mary Katherine Vaughn Levy age 93, of Rome, GA, died Monday, August 16, 2010, in a local hospital.
Ms. Levy was born in Marshall, AL on February 12, 1917, the daughter of the late Edward Vaughn and Etta McWhorter Vaughn. She retired as a beautician and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. In addition to her parents Ms. Levy was preceded in death by seven sisters, Connie, May, Vesper, Ruby, Mossie, Marie, and Edna and two brothers, Jimmy and Claudus Vaughn.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Deanne and James Dobbs of Rome; two grandchildren, Kelley Dobbs Burnett and Kim Dobbs Watson; a great-granddaughter, Shanah Yearous Hoyt; and two great- great-granddaughters, Ella and Olivia Hoyt. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home with Dr. Dale Levan officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Troy Dean Smith, age 82, 5 Clarendon Place, NW, Rome, passed away Monday morning, August 16, 2010 in a local hospital.
Mr. Smith was born in South Carolina on December 27, 1927, son of the late Rev. Marion Clyde Smith, Sr. and the late Eula Mae Brigman Smith. He was also preceded in death by his wife, the former Jacquelyn Vivian (Jackie) Hammond on July 25, 2010, by 3 sisters, Betty Smith Boatright, Peggy S. Koefoed, and Mable S. Barwick, and by a brother, M. C. Smith, Jr. Mr. Smith retired from the United States Merchant Marines following over 44 years of service. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Cynthia Taylor, and her husband, David Freeman, Villas, NC; a son, Robert Smith, and his wife, Debra, Rome; 4 grandchildren, Jonathan Blake Smith, Rome, Robert Nathan Smith, Rome, Talia Lee Freeman, Banner Elk, NC, and Melissa Smith Warren, and her husband, Justin, Lindale; 2 sisters, Mrs. Sandra Smith Williams, and her husband, J. Russell, Moncks Corner, SC, and Ms. Ann S. Sherfinski, Moncks Corner, SC; a brother, Victor Lee Ray Smith, Piedmont, SC; 2 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Gravely was born May 31,1917 in Floyd County, a daughter of the late Robert Lee Gossett and Frances Josephine Hill Gossett. She married Clyde Walters in 1933 and he died June 30,1948; she then married Allison(Sonny) Gravely June 16,1964 and he died Feb.5,1985. Also preceding her in death were sisters, Jewell Wallace, Jeanette Voils and brothers, Elliott Gossett and Robert Gossett, granddaughter, Sharon Lillie and daughter-in-law, Evelyn Howell Walters.
She was a member of West End Baptist Church, worked at Allen’s 5 & 10 then for 28 years prior to retirement was sales person in the fine furniture department at Wyatt’s.
Surviving are two sons, Vernon Walters, Rome and Terry(Annie) Walters, Jacksonville, NC; two sisters, Barbara Kimery, Rome and Alice Turner, Rome; three brothers, Jerry Gossett, Rome, Walter(Julia) Gossett, Albany and Billy Gossett,

Funeral services for Mrs.Ollie Mae Thacker Huckeba, affectionately known as “Granny”, who died at her residence 6115 Martha Berry Highway Saturday will be held at Noon Tuesday in the Chapel of Parnick Jennings, Sr.’s Good Shepherd Funeral Home with Rev.Charles Izell, pastor of Armuchee Church of God officiating. Interment will be in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
Mrs.Huckeba was born in Bartow County, July 9, 1920, a daughter of the late Arthur T. Thacker and Emmer Woodall Thacker. She was married to Hoke Green Huckeba Oct.8,1959 and he preceded her in death July 22, 1981. Five brothers also died Lee, Oscar, Buddy, Floyd and Louie Thacker. Mrs.Huckeba went to work at Tubize in the 1930’s, living on Juniper St. and retired from Celanese in 1964 as a Creeler in the Coning Room. She loved gardening and in 1977 was the subject of a feature story and photo in the Rome News-Tribune of her working in her large garden.
A longtime member of Friendship Baptist Church, she attended Armuchee Church of God.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Campbell Duvall Armuchee; grandchildren, Jeff and (Katie) Duvall, Arthur and (Serena), Armuchee; great-grandchildren, Kristy, Samatha, and Arthur Duvall II, Bryan and Shane Hood; 6 great-great grandchildren, Haley, Bradley, Samatha, Sabrina, Spencer and Sydney Hood; 2 sisters, Ruby Wright, Ringgold and Gertrude Garrett, Rome.
The family will receive friends from 6 untill 9 p.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Funeral Home.
The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers and are asked to meet at the Chapel by 11:30 a.m.Tuesday and include

Norma Lou Oakes
Mrs. Norma Lou Oakes, age 66, of 2215 Co. Rd. 812, Gaylesville, Alabama, passed away on Friday afternoon, August 13, 2010, at a local hospital.
Mrs. Oakes was born on September 3, 1943, daughter of the late John M. Fowler and the late Ruby J. McDonald Fowler. She was also preceded in death by her 1st husband, Jerry L. Padgett, and by a sister, Annie Lee Fowler. Mrs. Oakes was a homemaker. She was a member of the Faith Missionary Baptist Church for 14 years and was currently a member of the Victory Baptist Church in Cedar Bluff, Alabama.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. J. C. Oakes, to whom she was married on December 23, 1970; a daughter, Mrs. Phyllis Terry and her husband, Donny, Cave Spring; 4 sons, Danny Oakes and his wife, Tracy, Cedar Bluff, Ala., Jamie Oakes and his wife, Christine, Rome, Scott Oakes and Angie, Armuchee, and Jason Oakes and, Wendy, Gaylesville; a step-son, Johnny Carter, Rome; 13 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs. Anna Ruth Padgett and her husband, Jerry, Kennesaw, and Ms. Florence Fowler, Rome; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 16, 2010, at 11am in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. David Hatfield, the Rev. Herschel Dowdy, and the Rev. Derrick Roberts officiating. Interment will follow at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Mike Davenport and the Rev. Micah Gillespie officiating.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home on Sunday from 3 until 5pm. At other hours they will be at the residence.

Margie Elizabeth Payne
Margie Elizabeth Payne, age 87 of Rome died Wednesday morning, August 11th, 2010 at Summit Health Care of Rome.
A native of Cherokee County, Alabama, Mrs. Payne was born on June 10th, 1923, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mason. She had spent the great part of her life in Rome and was of the Baptist Faith. Prior to her retirement she was associated with Pet Bakeries. Mrs. Payne was married to Ralph Cleveland Payne who preceded her in death in 1970.
Survivors include 4 sons, several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. A sister also survives.

Martha Marie Gaylor
Mrs. Martha Marie Gaylor, age 70, of 460 Pineland Rd. SW. Mableton, Ga. passed away Tuesday Aug. 10th at her residence.
Mrs. Gaylor was born October 5, 1939 in Columbia, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Floyd David Maynard, and Ruby Beatrice Wilson Maynard. She was a member of Chattahoochee First Baptist Church, and a homemaker. Mrs. Gaylor was a graduate of Smith High School in Atlanta, where she met her husband Gene Gaylor who preceded her in death March 16, 2009.
Survivors include daughters, Tracee ( Steve) Thomas, Mableton, Ann Marie (Bobby) Smith, Villa Rica, Dena Renne Gaylor, Mableton, sons, Michael Wayne (Gena) Gaylor, Clayton County, Rodney Eugene Gaylor, Donnie Ray (Renee) Gaylor, both of Mableton, and, Danny Lee (April) Gaylor, Paulding County. Jeffery Kemp Lewis, age 44, of 14814 U.S. Highway 411 North, Center passed away August 9, in Cherokee Medical Center.
Jeffery was born October 20, 1965 in Floyd County. He was a member of Shorter Avenue Baptist Church, he worked as a Iron Worker for over 20 years, and with Auction United for several years. He was a graduate of Coosa High School class of 1983.

William Oliver Gill
Mr. William Oliver Gill age 85, of Rome, GA , went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Gill was born Webster County, GA on October 14, 1924, the son of the late Joseph Gill and Laura Cooper Gill. He served in the United States Marine Corps from July 1941 until October 1945 during World War II in the South Pacific and was a member of Rome Baptist Temple. Mr. Gill retired from General Electric in 1985 and worked with Curtis Packing from 1987 until 2007. He loved church and watching old western movies. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gill was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie “Margie” Gammon Gill; a son, Calvin Gill; a brother, Arthur Gill; a sister, Mary Protho; two infant brothers; and an infant sister.

Mrs. Boatner was a life long resident of Floyd County, GA the daughter of the late Charles E. Roberson and Mary Selena Stiles Roberson. She was a member of West Rome Assembly of God and a homemaker. In addition to Mrs. Boatner’s parents she was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Boatner; a brother, James Roberson and a sisters, Gertrude Waid, Jewel Dean Proctor, and Madeline Rucker.

John Terrance Woods III
Dr. John Terrance Woods, III, 64, of 85 North Edenfield Ridge Rome, passed away Saturday, August 7, 2010 in a local Rome hospital after a brief illness.
Dr. Woods was born in Wilmington, Delaware on November 15, 1945. He was the son of the late John Terrance Woods, Jr. and Opal John Boston Woods. Shortly afterwards, he and his family moved to Calhoun, Georgia where he attended public school, graduating from Calhoun High School in 1963. While in high school he won the National Association of Left-handed Golfers Tournament in 1962. The following year he was first runner-up at Pebble Beach for the same national title. He graduated from North Georgia College in 1967 and obtained a BS degree in Chemistry. While at North Georgia College, he was a member of Rex Fraternity, received the Distinguished Military Student Award, and was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Dr. Woods received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1971. He served an internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville, Indiana from 1971-1972. From 1972-1974 he served in the U. S. Army 10th Special Forces. In 1974, he was the Distinguished Graduate of the Army Flight Service School at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He attended the Diving Medicine School at the Washington Naval Yard in Washington, D.C. Dr. Woods completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology from the University of Florida Shands Teaching Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. In 1976 he served at the Armed Services Institute of Pathology at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Woods moved to Rome in 1977 and joined the Rome Radiology Group where he was instrumental in the introduction of ultrasound and CAT scan to Rome. He was board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology in 1977. He was a member of the American College of Radiology, Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, American Roentgen Ray Society, and Georgia Radiological Society.
Dr. Woods was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rome. He was also a member of the Nine O’Clock Cotillion, Coosa Country Club, and served on numerous local medical societies.
Dr.Woods is survived by his wife, Christina Burk Woods, to whom he was married on May 17, 1992. He is also survived by his son, John Terrance Woods, IV, Atlanta, and his daughter Dr. Valerie Woods Ambrose, his son-in-law Dr. John Hutchings Ambrose, Jr. and a grandson, John Hutchings Ambrose, III of Macon.
Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Rome Radiology Group.
Funeral services for Dr. Woods will be Monday, August 9, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Rome, 100 East Fourth Avenue. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm. There will be a private interment.

Wanda Jean Self
Mrs. Wanda Jean Self, age 83, 1500 South Johnson Ferry Road, Atlanta, formerly of Adairsville, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2010 in an Atlanta area rehabilitation facility.
Mrs. Self was born in Floyd County on March 6, 1927, daughter of the late Lawrence Lee Millican and the late Helen Grace Dempsey Millican. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond C. Morris, and by 2 sons, Allen and Jeff Morris. Mrs. Self owned and operated a children’s daycare facility in Shannon for a number of years. She was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Adairsville.
Survivors include a son, Greg Morris, and his wife, Laura, Athens; a brother, Carl Millican, and his wife, Dale, Cedartown; several grandchildren and great grandchildren survive, as well as nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 2:30pm at the graveside in Bush Arbor Cemetery. The Rev. Clifford Free will officiate.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday from 12:30 until 2pm. At other hours, they may be contacted at each of their respective homes.

Bernice McEntyre Carroll, age 95, a lifelong resident of Turkey Mountain Road, Rome, passed away August 8th, 2010.
Mrs. Carroll was born in Gordon County, Georgia on January 29th, 1915, the daughter of the late Frank and Lula Patterson McEntyre. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Silver Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Mrs. Carroll was preceded in death by 8 brothers and sisters and by a granddaughter, Andrea Carroll Morris. She was married in 1935 to Hoyt Wilson Carroll who preceded her in death in 1997.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Linda Carroll of Rome; 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Joyce and Rev. Wendell Woodfin of Ellijay, GA. and Gaile Carroll Wood of Mount Olive, Ala.; 5 grandchildren, Keith Woodfin, Rev. Kyle Woodfin and his wife, Alanna, Amy Evans and her husband, Kenny, Wayne Wood, Jr. and Andrew Carroll, 11 great-grandchildren. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Bernice McEntyre Carroll will be held this (Tuesday) afternoon, August 10th, 2010 at 4 o’clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley’s Funeral Home with her grandson, Rev. Kyle Woodfin officiating. Interment will be private for the family at the Wax Cemetery.

Pansy Carol Dorling
Pansy Carol Dorling, age 69, of #589 Trove Drive, Rome, (Garden Lakes Community) died Friday morning, August 6th, 2010 at the residence following an illness of 3 months.
A native of Rome, Mrs. Dorling was born on August 29th, 1940, the daughter of the late Grady and Lucy Lee Nichols Howren. She had spent the greater part of her life in Rome and for 10 years served as the manager of Fitting Your Needs in Rome prior to opening her own business, Pansy’s Post-Mastectomy Boutique. Pansy was very active in the community Cancer Society. Pansy was a member of the Dayspring Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include her husband, William, A. “Bill” Dorling to whom she was married on January 14th, 1977; 1 son, Kenneth Goewey of Rome; 4 step-children, Ernest Dorling, John Dorling and Mary Anne Arico all of Florida and Barbara Mabry of Virginia. Several step-grandchildren also survive.

Clayton A. Crowe
Clayton A. Crowe, age 83, of #8 Maplewood Square, Rome, GA. died Friday night, August 6th, 2010 in a Rome hospital.
A native of DeKalb County, Ala., Mr. Crowe was born on September 8th, 1926, the son of the late Forest A. and Edna Elizabeth Cordell Crowe. He had been a resident of Rome since 1950 and was a retired truck driver. Mr. Crowe was a member of the New Antioch Baptist Church at Shannon where he was a member of the Victor Sunday School Class. Mr. Crowe was an ordained Deacon and visited and spoke at nursing homes in Rome for many years. He was an active 50 year member of the East Floyd Masonic Lodge #728 F&AM and was a member of the Low 12 Club. Mr. Crowe was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Cronan in July 2010.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary E. Latham Crowe to whom he was married on February 25th, 1945; 1 son Dr. Roy Crowe and his wife, Karen of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 4 grandchildren, Rev. Brent Crowe of Orlando, FL., Rev. Matt Crowe of Colorado Springs, CO., Brooke Michelle Pogue and Kari Rebekka Seher both of Texas; 4 great-grandchildren also survive as do 3 sisters, Beulah Hoyle of Rossville, GA., Eloise Morris of Chattanooga, TN. and Betty Carpenter of Rosedale, GA.; 1 brother, Arthur Crowe and his wife, Barbara of Rome, GA. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Clayton A. Crowe will be held on Tuesday morning, August 10th, 2010 at 11 o’clock at the New Antioch Baptist Church at Shannon with the Rev. Tony Cargle and Mr. Crowe’s son, Dr. Roy Crowe officiating with interment to follow in East View Cemetery. Mr. Crowe will lie-in-state at the church on Tuesday morning from 10 until 11 o’clock.

Roberta Jane DeHart Sitten
Mrs. Roberta Jane DeHart Sitten, age 88, 1261 Old Cedartown Road, Lindale, passed away on Saturday morning, August 7, 2010, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Sitten was born in Lindale on April 22, 1922, daughter of the late Asbury Judson DeHart and the late Abilene Pegg DeHart. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Odis Allen Sitten on March 13, 1987, and by 2 sisters, Anna Bell Hilliard and Virginia Hilliard. She was employed for several years at the West Point Pepperell Manufacturing Co. in Lindale but prior to her retiring, she was employed with Thomas 5 & 10 here in Rome. Mrs. Sitten was a member of the East Rome Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Betty Sitten Kelley, and her husband, Johnny, Silver Creek; her son, Edwin Sitten, and his wife, Penny, Cartersville; 5 grandchildren, Alan Kelley, and his wife, Valerie, Gatlinburg, TN, Ms. Tracy Kelley, Silver Creek, Bart Sitten, and his wife, Alyssa, Cartersville, Mrs. Kara Kemp, and her husband, Nate, Cartersville, and Mrs. Keila Williams, and her husband, Chad, Cartersville; 8 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 2pm at the East Rome Baptist Church with the Rev. Earl Partain, Sr. and Dr. Larry Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Sitten will be taken to the East Rome Baptist Church on Tuesday to lie in state from 1pm until the funeral hour. Thomas J. Boylan
Thomas J. Boylan, 85, of Silver Creek, died in a Rome Hospital Aug.6. Mr.Boylan was born in Elyria, Ohio, March 5, 1925, a son of the late Philip Vernon Boylan and Helen Elizabeth Flynn Boylan.
He graduated from Ohio State Univ.with a BS degree in Journalism. Mr.Boylan had been Associate Editor of Building Materialist and Public Relations Director for the Ohio Association of Retail Lumber Dealers, Ass’t.Puiblications Editor and head of the Photographic Dept. For Exxon in the Caribbean, Southeastern sales representative for Acme Newspictures and Scripps-Howard NEA, Southeastern District Director of American Forest Products Industries, former Executive Director of the Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau, Advertising Manager and Public Relations Director of Rock City Gardens, Vice-President of Sequoyah Caverns,Inc., Vice-President and Creative Director for Chattanooga’s Wiliams, Ripple and Boylan Advertising Agency, moved to Rome in 1975 and retired in 1984 as Associate Director of Information for Berry College and coach of the Berry Chess Team. Mr. Boylan received an MBA from Berry and during his journalistic career won several Gold and Gold Chad Awards. He then formed TBX Inc.which later became Touch Base Company. He was a Roman Catholic.
On July 16th.of this year, he was preceeded in death by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Frances White Boylan. Surviving are two sons, Philip (Randy) Boylan and wife Tonya, Silver Creek and David Boylan and wife Starr, Rome; a brother, Frank Boylan and sister, Janet Logan; four grandchildren, Philip (Sara) Boylan, Thomas Joel Boylan, Kathryn Boylan and Stephen Boylan.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday in Rush Chapel United Methodist Church, Rome with the pastor Rev.Larry Russell officiating. Interment will be at 3 pm Tuesday in Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Chattanooga. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 am Tuesday.

Imogene Kessler Drummond
Mrs. Imogene Kessler Drummond, age 75, 120 E. Juniper Way, Rome, passed away Thursday evening, August 5, 2010, at her residence.
She was born in Lindale on December 4, 1934, daughter of the late Fred Kessler and the late Velma Gore Kessler. Prior to her retirement, she was employed for several years with Advance Glove here in Rome. Mrs. Drummond was a member of the Hollywood Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Benjamin “Bennie” Drummond.
Survivors include her husband, Roy B. Drummond, to whom she was married on December 30, 1949; her son, Wayne Drummond, and his wife, Patty, Armuchee; a granddaughter, Katie Drummond, Lindale; a brother, Max Kessler, Alabama; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside and interment services will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 12 noon at the graveside in Floyd Memory Gardens. The Rev. M. Keith Guyton and the Rev. Michael Jones will officiate.
Pallbearers will include staff members of Amedisys Hospice Care and are requested to assemble in Floyd Memory Gardens at 11:45am on Saturday.

Elmer “Bud” Fowler
Elmer “Bud” Fowler, age 79, of 43 King Bee Circle, Rome died Thursday morning August 5, 2010 at his residence.
A native of Floyd County, Mr. Fowler was born September 30, 1938 son of the late John W. and Elizabeth Tate Fowler. He had been a resident of Rome all his life and prior to retirement, was employed as a truck driver with Teamsters Local 515, his most recent position being with Latex Construction. Mr. Fowler was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Patricia Tyson Fowler on December 4, 1996, and by his sisters Lucille Shipman, Mary Lois Yarborough, and Viola Hicks. He will always be remembered as a generous man to his friends and family.
Survivors include his three children David Fowler and Penny Fowler, both of Rome and Deborah Beard of Lyerly; sister Johnnie Mae Isom of Rome, six grandchildren Christin and Johnathan Beard, Joshua Smith, Jake and Kalie Fowler, and Bret Ingram; great grandson Tobin Wooden, and a special friend and caregiver Debra Sue Beard also survive.
Graveside funeral and interment services will be conducted at 11 AM Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Floyd Memory Gardens with the Reverend George Nix officiating. The family received friends Friday evening from 6 until 8 PM at Daniel’s. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Joshua Smith, Jake Fowler, Johnathan Beard, Roylee Evans, Don Beard, and James Rayburn, Jr. Preston John Weeks will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

Larry Paul Neely
Mr. Larry Paul Neely age 57, of Rome, GA died Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Neely was born in New Castle, Indiana, on July 5, 1953, the son of Virgle Neely and Janice Hinton. He loved hunting and fishing.
In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Debra Sims Neely to whom he was married on June 4, 1982; three daughters and a son-in-law, Melinda and Randy Hopkins of Cedartown, GA, Bridgett Neely of Lakeland, FL, and Alesia Neely of Lakeland, FL; and eight grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, August 6, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home with Rev. Mikel Garrett officiating.

Lois William Story
Mr. Lois William Story, age 88, of 1913 Hull Avenue, Rome, passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at a local hospital.
Mr. Story was born in Cherokee County, Alabama on November 14, 1921, son of the late John Leonard Story and the late Willie Mae Elizabeth Henderson Story. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Rome and the Woodmen of the World, Omaha Woodmen Insurance Society. Prior to retirement, Mr. Story worked for Georgia Highway Express as a truck driver for over 40 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Imogene Story, on December 30, 1987, by 3 sons, James, Gerald and Baby Boy Story; by 4 sisters, Mrs. Alice Stephens, Mrs. Shirley Allison, Mrs. Willie Lou Woodward, and Mrs. Louise Graves, and by 3 brothers, John David, James Henry, and Billy J. Story.
Survivors include his wife, the former Cameron Beeson, to whom he was married on December 27, 1993; 2 daughters, Mrs. Betty L. Hess, Marietta, and Mrs. Jeannie Shumate, Rome; 2 sons, Larry M. Story, Cedar Bluff, Ala., and Ronald S. Story, Ozark, Ala.; 9 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a step-daughter, Ms. Darlene Sanders, Humboldt, Tenn.; a step-son, Gary Vinson, Jackson, Tenn.; a sister, Mrs. Verna Prather, Rome; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 6, 2010, at 2pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. John Rayburn officiating. Interment will follow in the Mill Creek Cemetery in Gaylesville, Ala.

David Hugh Lester
Mr. David Hugh Lester, age 68, of 2 Brookrun Place SW, Rome, passed away Tuesday afternoon, August 3, 2010.
Mr. Lester was born in Roanoke, VA on April 13, 1942, son of the late, Henry Allen Lester and the late Hazel Miles Lester. He was a retired employee of the Rome General Electric Plant and a member of the GE EMF Club. Mr. Lester was a volunteer Scout Leader of Troop # 4 of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lester was preceded in death by a sister, Debbie Anderson.
Survivors include his wife, the former Vicki Holder, to whom he was married on August 10, 1985; 2 daughters, Erin Holcombe-Olsen and her husband, John, Nashville, TN, and Lorrie Lester Barnette, Cartersville; 2 sons, Jonathan Lester and his girlfriend, Emily McDaniel, Atlanta, and David Randal Lester and his wife, Jennifer, Columbus; 2 granddaughters, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Lester and Caroline Olivia Lester; 1 sister, Jenny Oyler and her husband, Jerry, Rocky Mount, VA; 2 brothers, Joe Allen Lester and his wife, Margie, Kingsland, MD, and Richard Lester and his wife, Charlene, Salem, VA; two aunts, Margaret Mayberry and Vonda Miles both of Rustburg, VA; his father-in-law and mother in law, Wayman and Jerry Ann Holder, Rome; a sister in law, Alison Ciccone and her husband, John, Haymarket, VA; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 6, 2010, at 4 pm at the Fellowship Baptist Church. The Rev. Greg Cater, the Rev. Dr. Gary Batchelor, and the Rev. Dr. Dale Levan will officiate. Interment services will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010, at 10 am at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the Fellowship Baptist Church immediately following the service until 7 pm. At other hours they may be contacted at the residence.

Elizabeth Ann Roach
Elizabeth Ann Roach, age 82, of #45 Jeffery Street, NE, Rome, died Sunday morning, August 1st, 2010 at a local hospital.
A native of Cherokee County, Alabama, Mrs. Roach was born on January 20th, 1928, the daughter of the late Lother Thomas Gossett and the late Bessie Arnold Gossett. She had spent the greater part of her life in Floyd County and was a homemaker. Mrs. Roach was a member of the Rome Church of Christ, a long standing member of the Wayside Road Homemakers Club, was a member of the American Iris Society and was an honorary member of the Busy Bee Garden Club. Mrs. Roach was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Roach in 1949 and by a grandson, Jeffery Day. She was married on December 2nd, 1945 to Paul Orion Roach who preceded her in death on January 16th, 2006.
Survivors include 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Bobby Jones, Vickie and Mike Brock and Jackie and Roger Ramey all of Rome; 5 grandchildren, Matt and Ben Crane, Dwayne Day, Wendi Rood and Jenny Nadu; 6 great-grandchildren, Anna Day, Elise and Nick Nadu, Connor Crane, Jack and Stella Rood; 1 brother, Sonny Gossett of Centre, Alabama. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Elizabeth Ann Roach will be held on Wednesday afternoon, August 4th, 2010 at 3 o’clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley’s Funeral Home with Minister Brooks Boyd officiating with interment to follow in the family lot of East View Cemetery.

Lyndell Cordelia Burkhalter Madden
Mrs. Lyndell Cordelia Burkhalter Madden, age 87, 2522 Reeceburg Road, Cedartown, passed away Monday morning, August 2, 2010 at her residence.
Mrs. Madden was born in Floyd County on October 26, 1922, daughter of the late John Austin and Minnie Winkles Burkhalter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Bennie (R.B.) Madden, Sr. on January 10, 1999, by 2 sisters, Zylpha Louise Burkhalter and Rebecca Geraldine Burkhalter Sartin, and by 2 brothers, Arvil Austin and John Winston Burkhalter. She was employed for over 10 years with the West Point Pepperell Manufacturing Co. in Lindale but prior to her retirement, she was employed almost 20 years with Advance Glove here in Rome. Mrs. Madden was a member of the Silver Creek United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Linda Madden Evans, and her husband, Max, Cedartown; 2 sons, Bennie Madden, and his wife, Gail, Lindale, and Bradley Madden, and his wife, Debra, Taylorsville; a sister, Mrs. Zella Mae Burkhalter Hopkins, and her husband, Jim, Huntsville, AL; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Virginia Burkhalter, Rome; 6 grandchildren, 2 honorary grandchildren, Christina Walker and Candace Youngblood, both of Silver Creek; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 1pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Morris Cargle and Dr. Bill Landers officiating. Interment will follow in New Bethel Cemetery.
