  • WEDNESDAY NIGHT SERIES: For four Wednesday nights in September, Shorter University music professor Dr. Sherri Weiler will lead a study-discussion of David A. DeSilva’s book Sacramental Life: Spiritual Formation Through the Book of Common Prayer. The book focuses on the four  rites of baptism, Eucharist, marriage, and burial, exploring each one in depth through the prayers, liturgies, and scripture readings of the BCP. There are added devotional exercises to help us immediately apply what we’ve just reflected on. If you are interested in exploring ways to become spiritually formed through an old book that has shaped thousands of disciples through the years, please join us on September 8, 15, 22, and 29 at 6:30 p.m. in Daniel Hall. De Silva writes: “I hope that, as you read and pray through this guide, you will discover afresh the ways in which the rites contained in the Book of Common Prayer facilitate a genuine encounter with God, and a transforming experience of grace.” De Silva was raised an Episcopalian and became an ordained United Methodist minister after attending the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He is currently professor of New Testament and Greek at Ashland Theological Seminary in Ohio.  Books will be sold for $15 at the first class meeting, September 8. Please email Sherri at sweiler@shorter.edu if you would like to have one available for purchase at that time.
  • SEPTEMBER ADULT FORUM SCHEDULE: Meets in Daniel Hall following the 10:00 a.m. service.  September 19: Introduction to series on writers with Christian aspects to their works.  September 26: Review of Barbara Brown Taylor’s Cathedral workshop and her latest book An Altar in the World—Bambi Berry.
  • BENEFIT RECITAL: Mezzo-Soprano Christine Hawkins, a 2008 Shorter graduate, will perform a Benefit Recital here at St. Peter’s on Sunday, September 12, 4:00 p.m.  She will be accompanied by 2010 Shorter graduate Thomas Williams, who has been a substitute organist and frequently attended at St. Peter’s.  Many of you will remember Christy as an alto choir member for at least 3 years during her college time in Rome.  After leaving Shorter, Christy continued to complete her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where (hailing from Cartersville) she became shockingly intimate with cold weather!  While at UMD, Christy traveled to China and Turkey to sing and study.  This September Christy will be departing Georgia for a year’s study in Paris, France.  She will be working as an au pair to cover her living expenses while studying at the Conservatoire De Région de Boumogne Billancourt with Mme. Esthel Durand, and will be living in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, about 30 min. outside Paris. She will also be studying intensive French for 10 hours a week, working towards fluency.  Please come and support Christy with your attendance and your financial gifts as she begins this new chapter in her life.

Children’s Corner:

The big news in Children’s Ministries this week is that we have a full roster of volunteers for the entire school year. Thank you for helping me plan a great year for St. Peter’s kids!

Today in Sunday School, little kids will learn about Noah and the Ark and big kids will have a Seder meal as part of their workshop, “The Moses Chronicles.” What do these stories from the Old Testament tell us about who we are? From whence and whom do we come? What are the promises God made to us ages ago, which we are still living into today?
