Cancer Navigators and survivors part of Sunday’s Falcon game

The NFL and the Atlanta Falcons are celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a variety of activities and a group of Romans will be part of the festivities at this week’s game.

During Sunday’s breast cancer awareness game, where Atlanta takes on the Oakland Raiders as the Falcons aim to extend their perfect season, Cancer Navigators and a group of its breast cancer survivors and caretakers will be part of the pre-game ceremonies as the Falcons Fitness Flag Crew that will unfurl a giant flag on the field just before kickoff.

The group will spend Sunday morning at the stadium, where they will meet with the Falcons cheerleaders, stretch and take photos. Then they will practice unveiling the flag on the field followed by lunch, after which they will take their position in the visitors’ end zone to get ready for their pre-game role. After kickoff, the Cancer Navigators group will stay and watch the game as guests of the Atlanta Falcons.

“We were thrilled when we got the call from the Atlanta Falcons inviting us to be part of this very special game,” said Charlotte Atkins, executive director of Cancer Navigators. “The fact that the NFL and the Falcons have gone pink for the month of October and embraced the cause of Breast Cancer Awareness is wonderful. Our breast cancer patients/survivors and navigators who are participating are so excited to be part of Sunday’s game, especially since our Falcons are going for 6-0 this weekend.”

In addition, cheerleaders, operations crew, drum line and Freddie Falcon will dress in pink uniforms and the national anthem will be performed by a breast cancer survivor. A large pink ribbon will be held by breast cancer survivors during the national anthem, and the Falcons flag used for player introductions will be unfurled by breast cancer survivors from Floyd, Chattooga, Bartow and Cherokee (Ala) counties as part of the Cancer Navigators team.

According to the NFL, the breast cancer awareness games will feature:

* Game balls with pink ribbon decals used for every down and pink kicking tees

* Pink equipment for players including: cleats, wristbands, gloves, sideline caps, helmet decals, captains’ patches, chin straps, shoe laces, skull caps, sideline towels, eye shield decals and quarterback towels

* Pink coins used for the coin toss

* Pink sideline caps for coaches and sideline personnel and pink ribbon pins for coaches and team executives

* Pink caps, wristbands, whistles and pins for game officials

* On-field pink ribbon stencils
