Saturday September 22nd was the annual Rome Shriner’s football game between the Coosa Eagles and Pepperell Dragons. Coosa hosted the event that welcomed over 1,700 spectators; although the home field advantage did not help their game, which was shut out by the Dragons 28 to 0.
In the 1st quarter neither team gave up much ground until a strong drive by Pepperell put the Dragons on the scoreboard first with 3:10 left on the clock. This sole scoring drive of the quarter went unanswered, and Pepperell’s strong defense kept the Eagles from venturing into their territory until the second quarter.
Early on 2nd quarter Pepperell scored again with a pass, doubling their lead over Coosa 14 to 0. Leading into the 2nd half the Dragons scored yet again leaving the Eagles under 1 minute to rally, but to no avail.
3rd quarter marked a series of mistakes by the Eagles including a blocked punt that turned the ball over to the Dragons. This gave Pepperell A good position on the field to score again, and they did, passing the ball to land the last field goal of the game with 7:11 left in the quarter. A strong drive by Coosa later on gave the Eagles an opportunity to score, but Pepperell’s strong defense kept them at bay near the goaline.
What seemed to be Coosa’s first appearance on the scoreboard 3 minutes into the last quarter was overturned by a 5 yard penalty from a false start by the Eagles; the home team never recovered giving way to a banal and scoreless 4th quarter. Final score: Pepperell 28, Coosa 0.
