St. Mary’s Catholic Church Youth Group’s “Love Thy Neighbor” project

Some local youth are spending some of their summer break helping others. Members of the youth group from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rome recently spent the day landscaping the Cancer Navigators office at 310 W. 10th St.  as part of their “Love Thy Neighbor” summer project.

Some of the youngsters had already been over to help weed, trim hedges and clean up. They returned after having raised some funds to spruce up the planting beds. Ballard Betz of the church’s religious education and youth programs coordinated the group of teens.

They planted knockout roses and junipers and other plants. When Lowe’s found  out about the young people’s mission, they gave them a 65-75 percent discount on the plants. They put down about 10 bales of pine straw donated by Dr. Leverett and Celese Neville.

The teens included Nick Goble, Eric Remoroza, Jere Tan, Muno Nyamuanga, Matthew Remoroza and Nathanial Tan. Tom Lee, the church housekeeping super, coordinated plant placement and Rusty Rossiter, Messengerz middle school youth leader, was also on hand helping the kids.
