A home in rural Northeast Floyd County was completely gutted by a blaze just before dawn Saturday while the homeowner was out of town.
The structure fire at 63 Price Road was originally reported by a passerby around 6:00 am Saturday, leading firefighters from Rome Fire Engines 4 and 9 along with Quint 3 and Car 25 to respond. As fire units raced to scene, additional reports came into 911 stating that the home was heavily involved. Engine 4 arrived and confirmed those reports, advising other units that flames were already shooting from the roof of the single story home.
According to Rome Fire Captain Phil Litton, the remote location and lack of water supply became an obstacle almost immediately, with the nearest fire hydrant located at Morrison Campground Road at Fred Kelley Road. Due to the severity of the fire, it was decided that firefighters with Quint 3 would utilize its 70 foot ladder to douse the flames from above. To accomplish this, firefighters laid around 1600 feet of hose line and began a pump relay operation, having to put a pumper engine near the eastern end of Price Road as to not lose water pressure.
After confirming with neighbors that the homeowner was in Alabama at the time of the blaze, firefighters began battling the blaze in a defensive type mode, spraying flames from the the outside of the home which was already a total loss. Engine 1 was also called to the scene to assist with man power and pumping water.
Capt. Litton told Rome Newswire that the cause of the fire was under investigation, and that an investigator from the Rome Fire Marshal’s Office was en route to the scene.
With the firefighters shift ending at 7:00 am, fire support vehicles began bringing firefighters from Saturday’s shift to scene, and shuttling the past shifts firefighters back to their stations.
Morrison Campground Road from Fred Kelley Road to Price Road and also Price Road through the 100 block were completely shutdown by fire hoses and blocked by Floyd County Police as fire crews worked to douse hot spots, an operation that would likely last through the late morning.

Firefighters from Rome Fire Quint 3 prepare to douse the remaining flames from above after a house at 63 Price Rd.
